Italian Development Cooperation

Italian Development Cooperation activities are regulated by law n. 49 of 1987 under which the current General Direction for Development Cooperation at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation was created. On 29 August, 2014 the new law 125 of 2014 was enforced - “General Guideline for International Development Cooperation”  - which defines cooperation as “a qualifiable and integral part of foreign policy.”

The new law on the one hand had the objective to systematically update the Italian cooperation system 27 years after the approval of law 49/1987 on Development Cooperation, with the aim to order tools, means of intervention and guidelines shaped in the meantime in the international community; on the other, to update the Italian Development Cooperation system in agreement with the models prevailing among Eu partner countries.
