The Law

On 29 August 2014, the new Law “General Discipline on International Cooperation for Development” (Italian Law 11 August 2014, no. 125) came into force. On the one hand, it aims to systematically update the overview of the system, 27 years after approval of Italian Law 49/1987 on Cooperation for Development, by reorganizing the actors, instruments, modes of action and standard principles which, in the meantime, have evolved in the international community; on the other hand, it aims to bring the Italian Development Cooperation system in line with the prevailing models in EU partner countries.

The new law replaces Italian Law 49/1987, provides for the re organization of the entire subject matter and for the creation of the present Directorate General for Development Cooperation (DGCS).
